Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful information about acupuncture, your first appointment and personalised Chinese Medicine care at our Goodwood clinic.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile, single-use needles that are much thinner than those used for injections. Most people experience little discomfort during insertion. You may notice a brief prick, gentle tingling, heaviness or a dull aching sensation around some points.
Your comfort is important. Please let your practitioner know if anything feels uncomfortable so the technique can be adjusted.
What Should I Expect at My First Appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a discussion of your main concerns, medical history, current medications and treatment goals. Depending on your symptoms, the assessment may also include observation, movement testing, palpation and traditional Chinese Medicine assessment methods.
Your practitioner will explain the recommended treatment, answer your questions and obtain your consent before proceeding. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and may include acupuncture or other suitable Chinese Medicine approaches.
For your appointment, wear comfortable clothing and consider having a light meal or snack beforehand.
How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need?
The number and frequency of appointments depend on your symptoms, how long they have been present, your overall health and your response to treatment.
Some people seek care for a recent concern, while others attend for ongoing symptoms or support during rehabilitation. We will discuss a suitable treatment plan and review your progress regularly, adjusting recommendations according to your needs and goals.
Can Acupuncture Be Combined With Other Medical Treatments?
Yes. Acupuncture can often be considered alongside physiotherapy, exercise rehabilitation and other medical care. Our approach values communication and coordination with your existing healthcare providers where appropriate.
Please tell us about your medical conditions, medications, recent surgery and any other treatments you are receiving. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine should not replace necessary medical assessment or prescribed treatment.
Can I Claim Acupuncture Through Private Health Insurance?
You may be eligible for a private health insurance rebate for acupuncture, depending on your health fund, level of cover and applicable provider requirements.
We recommend checking your policy and available benefits directly with your health fund before your appointment. Rebates are not guaranteed and may vary between insurers and policies.
